Support available to those impacted by alcohol and drugs
This week is mental health awareness week. Mental health issues can be especially significant for people who use alcohol and drugs, and are closely linked. People may drink or use drugs to help them deal with mental distress, but alcohol and drug use itself can lead to mental health problems which can leave folk in a vicious cycle.

Shetland Early Detection of Mouth Cancer Event
April is World Head and Neck Cancer month On Wednesday 24 April, Dr Abu-Eid and Dr Katie Hanna from the University of Aberdeen Institute Of Dentistry will travel to Shetland to co-host an Early Detection of Mouth Cancer Event at Islesburgh Community Centre.

NHS Shetland successfully reduces length of stay for surgical patients
In 2023, NHS Shetland undertook a pilot on the surgical ward to reduce the number of beds from 20 to 13, to better reflect the number of patients needing inpatient care. The pilot demonstrated that as a result of opening the new Day Surgical and Ambulatory Care Unit in September 2022, fewer patients required an overnight stay in hospital.

NHS Shetland Celebrating Excellence Awards
A presentation and celebration of some of the best improvement work undertaken by NHS Shetland teams during the past year was held virtually on Friday 8 March, where staff presented eleven projects to their colleagues and the Board for the annual celebrating Excellence in Care Awards, 2023-24.

Permanent MRI scanner on track to scan first patients by early summer
Following a successful fundraising campaign, generous donations, and support from the Scottish Government, patients could have MRI scans by early summer in Shetland.

Gilbert Bain Hospital car park arrangements during MRI building delivery
Due to the weather forecast from tomorrow, (Tuesday 20 February) onwards, and ferry cancellations at the weekend, the modular columns that will form the MRI building will not be installed this week.

With further snowfall today and rain and strong winds forecast, the yellow weather warning is due to remain in place until 9am tomorrow. However, please bear in mind that the thaw may be slow to clear and icy conditions could remain in place for a few days.
