Secondary Care - Orthodontics, Sedation and Maxillofacial Surgery at Gilbert Bain Hospital

The dental services provided at Gilbert Bain Hospital include Orthodontics, Maxillofacial Surgery / Oral Surgery, Inhalation Sedation and routine Dental appointments, are part of the Public Dental Service run by NHS Shetland.

Orthodontics

The consultant orthodontic service is by referral only. Patients get referred by their dentists to the consultant orthodontists. The service is run as a clinical network with the visiting consultant staff, and other visiting staff.

Sedation

This can be offered to anxious and phobic patients in order to allow dental treatment to be completed. Your suitability for this needs to be assessed by our dentists.

Dental sedation does not put you to sleep like a general anaesthetic but instead, puts you into a deeply relaxed state. So you are still conscious and able to talk with your dentist.

Maxillofacial Surgery / Oral Surgery

The maxillofacial service also only sees patients who have been referred by either their doctor or dentists. The service is run as a clinical network with Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, which provides the visiting consultant staff.
