I would be grateful if you could send me the following information in regard to people receiving Diabetes Monitors in your health board:
Blood Glucose Monitors
There are various different types of diabetes monitors, no patient who requires a blood glucose monitor has to wait for one. They are available in all health centres for patients who are on medication for diabetes which may cause a hypo, (Insulin or sulfonylureas) there is also a supply in the diabetes clinic for distribution.
Flash Glucose Monitors
Flash Glucose monitoring systems are also available for all patients with Type 1 diabetes and for some patients with Type 2 diabetes.
Patients with Type 2 diabetes who are on multiple daily insulin injections, patients are encouraged to complete the training modules to ensure their safety whilst using these systems.
As per the NICE guidelines there are caveats to this and are considered on an individual basis.
The patients who use the Flash Glucose Monitoring system on their smart phone, as of 17th July 2023, if they update their app, have the ability to scan their sensor and it also becomes a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM).
Continuous Glucose Monitors
Continuous glucose monitoring is based on individual patient needs following clinical assessment. We do not therefore monitor waits for diabetes monitors.
