Covid Deaths - FOI Response Register

Please note NHS Shetland has only one hospital, the Gilbert Bain Hospital.
Covid-19 is defined as ICD 10 codes U07.1 & U07.2.

1. Can you tell me the total amount of deaths where COVID-19 was listed as the sole cause of
death on a death certificate in 2023 within all hospitals in NHS Shetland seperated by
hospital and age category?

Nil

2. Can you tell me the total amount of deaths where COVID-19 was listed as the underlying
cause of death in 2023 within all hospitals in NHS Shetland seperated by hospital and age
category ?

With regards to the age breakdown then in accordance with FOISA s 16(1), NHS Shetland
confirms that it holds the information requested but that it is exempt from disclosure under
FOISA s 38(1)(b) as read with s 38 (2A) as the information constitutes personal data and
disclosure would breach the confidentiality of the data subjects.

This is because providing the age breakdown in combination with a specific year, cause of
death, and location of death would risk identifying individuals.

3. Can you tell me the total amount of NON COVID deaths within all hospitals in NHS Shetland
in 2023 seperated by hospital ?

Defining Non Covid deaths as deaths which did not list Covid-19 as an Underlying Cause of
Death or as a Cause of Death Code.
