  1. How many strokes (also known as cerebrovascular accidents) were recorded each year in the NHS Shetland region? I’m looking for the annual totals across a five-year period, covering 2018 to 2023 (all years inclusive, as well as a breakdown by month please).

NHS Shetland uses the ICD 10 coding system. Figures provided are for the number of inpatients where the ICD 10 code I63 Cerebral infarction was listed as Main Condition or Other Condition.

  1. How many people were admitted to NHS Shetland's Accident and Emergency departments for strokes? Again, I’m looking for the annual totals in a five-year period, covering 2018 to 2023, and a breakdown by month please.

Figures provided are for the number of A&E attendances where the Presenting Complaint or Diagnosis mention stroke – note that the information NHS Shetland holds for this question is on a different basis from that in question 1.

Where we have given <5 numbers, this is because NHS Shetland considers that providing more specific detail carries a high risk of identifying individuals. As such and in accordance with FOISA s 16(1), NHS Shetland confirms that it holds the information requested but that it is exempt from disclosure under FOISA s 38(1)(b) as read with s 38 (2A) as the information constitutes personal data and disclosure would breach the confidentiality of the data subjects.
