What is the current criteria/ policy for a child or young person to access a school nurse in your Board (please send me a copy of the policy)?
a) In primary school’s mainstream
Child or young person has been identified by another professional as benefiting from School Nurse support on the School Nurse pathways – Scottish Government 2018.
Parents can contact the School Nurse team directly for support, this will be assessed and implemented or redirected as appropriate.
b) In secondary school’s mainstream
Child or young person has been identified by another professional as benefiting from School Nurse support on the School Nurse pathways – Scottish Government 2018.
Parents can contact the School Nurse team directly for support, this will be assessed and implemented or redirected as appropriate.
Young person can self-refer.
c) In primary schools – special needs
Additional support pupils can be referred in the same manner as main stream. No dedicated Additional support schools in this area.
d) In secondary schools – special needs
Additional support pupils can be referred in the same manner as main stream. No dedicated Additional support schools in this area.
e) Schools that are one building for primary and secondary
As separate schools.

Dedicated joint meetings, email, phone calls, face to face as appropriate.

Depends on the context of the information. Information is shared in lines with Child protection, and data protection guidelines.

In
- Receiving referrals for school nurses in terms of eligibility and allocation of a school nurse
School Nursing acceptance or decline of a referral is at the discretion of the school nurse team. If a referral is declined the referee is sign posted to most appropriate service and explanation given.
- Working with children and young people
Joint working occurs when required.
- Working with parents, families, carers
Joint working and referrals are made to both areas as required.
- Working with other professionals (i.e. Team Around the Child/ GIRFEC etc).

Local GIRFEC guidelines are currently under review.

In accordance with FOISA s 17(1), NHS Shetland confirms that it does not hold the information requested. Our current recording system is under review.

In accordance with FOISA s 17(1), NHS Shetland confirms that it does not hold the information requested. Our current recording system is under review.
c) Are on a waiting list to be allocated or assessed by a school nurse?
Since the start of the new school term – <1% of children are currently waiting to be assessed following a referral.
d) Were declined access to a school nurse for not meeting the criteria?
Since the start of the new school term – No children have been declined access to a school nurse for not meeting criteria.
