Request and Response
  1. Between 1st January 2014 and 31st December 2024 inclusive, the number of patients diagnosed with cancer by NHS Shetland, broken down by the year of diagnosis and the type of cancer (e.g. as listed by the NHS Foundation Trust here: https://www.royalmarsden.nhs.uk/your-care/cancer-types).

Many Shetland cancers across all of the listed cancers are diagnosed by NHS Grampian.

Shetland breast screening is managed by NHS Grampian so the breast data given below will be symptomatic patients only.

NHS Shetland patients with Leukaemia, Myeloma, Paediatric Cancers, Ewing’s Sarcoma will all be diagnosed by NHS Grampian or another mainland board.

Cancer of Unknown Primary is not held as part of the Scottish Cancer Waiting Times data or the Scottish Cancer Quality Performance Indicator data so is not included in the response.

The data is only new invasive primaries, with the exception of Breast (which includes Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ) and Bladder (which includes non- invasive pTa and in-situ tumours).

2024 data is not complete so numbers may change following response.

Where we have given <5 answers and where ranges are provided instead of totals, this is because NHS Shetland considers that providing more specific detail carries a high risk of identifying individuals. As such, and in accordance with FOISA s 16(1), NHS Shetland confirms that it holds the information requested but that it is exempt from disclosure under FOISA s 38(1)(b) as read with s 38 (2A) as the information constitutes personal data and disclosure would breach the confidentiality of the data subjects.
