For an appointment outside Shetland

If you’ve been referred for treatment outside Shetland, please contact the Patient Travel Office to arrange your ferry or flight.

Patient Travel will provide you with a claim form along with your travel documents. You’re entitled to claim the cost of travel to and from the airport or ferry terminal. You can also claim for any necessary overnight accommodation.

You will receive an information booklet from the hospital or clinic to which you’ve been referred, and details are also normally available online. The most common place for treatment off-island is NHS Grampian. You can find information about NHS Grampian hospitals and clinics online.

If you’re flying to Aberdeen, Patient Travel will also book you on to a minibus that takes you directly from the airport to various NHS Grampian facilities. Patient Travel can tell you where and when to meet the minibus.

If you’re sailing to Aberdeen, you can catch frequent buses to NHS Grampian facilities from the main road adjacent to the ferry.
