In recent months, we have been thoroughly assessing the infrastructure at the Gilbert Bain Hospital and associated buildings. The community will be aware this is an older facility that requires ongoing upkeep and maintenance to ensure it remains safe and functional. Our staff were informed of this update earlier today.
A series of detailed surveys have been carried out by contractors to evaluate the condition of the buildings. While we await the final outcomes of the various condition surveys, it has become evident that some immediate work is needed, particularly as we approach the colder months, to preserve the building and support its continued use for at least the next 10-15 years.
What we do know from the initial feedback is that the building is not unsafe structurally and there is no evidence to suggest concern about the integrity of the hospital e.g. no use of RAAC concrete.
We understand that maintenance work can sometimes be disruptive, and we are taking every possible step to minimise the impact on hospital services. Our dedicated teams are working hard to ensure that all aspects of service provision remain operational as the work progresses.
As part of the preparation for planning and investigative work scheduled to begin in January, there may be temporary adjustments or relocations within some areas of the hospital. However, please be assured that services will remain accessible, and patient care will continue with minimal interruption.
We are committed to keeping patients and visitors informed of any changes to services or access well in advance. Every effort is being made to limit disruption and ensure that our hospital remains a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we undertake these essential improvements. Your health, safety, and well-being are our highest priorities, and we will continue to provide regular updates to keep you informed of our progress.
We will be in touch with patients directly about any location changes to appointments in due course. There is no need for concern, but our staff do not know the details of the changes yet and will not be able to answer questions at this moment in time.
