Improving the Cancer Journey

The Improving the Cancer Journey (ICJ) service, delivered in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, is celebrating its first anniversary this month with a special community event — and everyone is invited.

Since launching in August 2024, the ICJ service has supported adults affected by cancer — including patients, families, friends, and carers — by offering dedicated one-to-one support and access to a wide range of services across Shetland and beyond. The service has received 34 referrals in its first year and continues to make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

To mark this important milestone, the ICJ team will host a celebratory event on Tuesday 29 July, from 11am to 3pm, in Room 10 at Islesburgh Community Centre. The event is open to all — whether you're someone affected by cancer, a healthcare professional, or simply interested in learning more about the service. Guests will have the opportunity to meet the team, hear about the service’s achievements so far, discover how ICJ can support individuals and families across the isles. There will also be leaflets to pick up and some light refreshments will be provided.

If anyone would like to have a conversation with an ICJ Link Worker, there will also be a separate private space available.

Karen Hannay, General Manager of Shetland Community Connections and ICJ Service Lead, said: “It’s been an encouraging first year, and we’re proud of the difference the service has already made. This event is a great opportunity to highlight the progress so far and to let more people know that support is out there. Whether you’ve been personally affected by cancer, support someone who has, work in healthcare, or just want to learn more — everyone is welcome. I’d like to thank the many staff who have been directly and indirectly involved with supporting, delivering and promoting the service in Shetland.”

Some feedback captured from service users throughout the year is already highlighting how valuable the ICJ Shetland programme is.

One individual said: Thank you again for all your help and support - it is making a positive difference for us…

Another person states:Thanks to you both for all you have done on behalf of my sister and the help and information that you've provided. We all appreciate what you have done for her.”

The ICJ service is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and delivered by Shetland Community Connections. Commissioned by NHS Shetland for the next five and a half years, ICJ is part of a national 10-year strategy to transform cancer care in Scotland. The Scottish Government has recognised ICJ as a key initiative that every health board must offer.

In Shetland, the service is delivered by Link Worker Cherie Wallace, and is excited to be currently recruiting to a second Link Worker position.
