International Overdose Awareness Day

Today, 31 August, is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Every life lost to overdose is one too many. Please join at the Lerwick Flower Park this evening, 8pm - 10pm, and remember all those affected by overdose. We encourage everyone to come along, light a candle, and share their own reason for supporting a safer and healthier community. Overdose does not discriminate.

The stigma experienced by people who use substances and their families often delays people seeking help. Stigma puts barriers in the way of recovery and reintegration. This can be even more pronounced in a small community

  • Individuals can self-refer directly to the local specialist team or can contact their GP, where an assessment will then be made. Crisis services are also available. You can contact the Substance Support and Recovery Service on 01595 743006.
  • Please see the NHS Inform website (Challenging drug and alcohol stigma | NHS inform) for further information on the impact of stigma on individuals, family members and communities.
  • The Shetland Recovery Hub & Community Network provide free one-on-one support to anyone experiencing problems due to alcohol or substance use, as well as support to their friends and family.
