Induction

Starting a new job is both exciting and challenging. There is lots of information to take in, new colleagues to meet and learning about your new role – it can be overwhelming.

Your Induction period is a chance to learn how things work within NHS Shetland, embrace our vision and values and discover what your new role will look like in reality.

Our Induction process involves:

  • Staff Induction Handbook
  • Corporate Induction
  • Local Induction
  • Compulsory Training

Staff Induction Handbook: In this document you will find information about what you can expect from NHS Shetland as an employer, as well as what the organisation expects from you.  You will be introduced to our culture, policies and procedures.

Corporate Induction: This is either an in-person or virtual welcome to NHS Shetland.  This fairly informal session is an opportunity to explore what it means to live out our values and also to experience them for yourself in your working life. It is an opportunity to ask questions, to meet the staff development team and other new colleagues from throughout the organisation.

Local Induction: This is about learning where, how and with whom you will carry out your role.  Your manager will create an induction plan to highlight what your first few weeks will look like.  You should have an induction to your work area on your first day – this involves being shown around the building, meeting key colleagues and having health and safety and fire arrangements explained to you.

An Induction Programme will guide your Local Induction ensuring your manager covers all relevant information with you at appropriate times throughout your Induction period.

Compulsory Training: a comprehensive e-learning suite is being developed to ensure that you are covering all required compulsory training within your induction period. This also includes an introduction to Subject Matter Experts with an overview of the subject and relevance and scope within the organisation.

Compulsory role specific training will be identified by your manager and arrangements made for completion within your induction period.
