  • Shetland Early Detection of Mouth Cancer Event

    April is World Head and Neck Cancer month On Wednesday 24 April, Dr Abu-Eid and Dr Katie Hanna from the University of Aberdeen Institute Of Dentistry will travel to Shetland to co-host an Early Detection of Mouth Cancer Event at Islesburgh Community Centre.

  • NHS Shetland successfully reduces length of stay for surgical patients

    In 2023, NHS Shetland undertook a pilot on the surgical ward to reduce the number of beds from 20 to 13, to better reflect the number of patients needing inpatient care. The pilot demonstrated that as a result of opening the new Day Surgical and Ambulatory Care Unit in September 2022, fewer patients required an overnight stay in hospital.

    A presentation and celebration of some of the best improvement work undertaken by NHS Shetland teams during the past year was held virtually on Friday 8 March, where staff presented eleven projects to their colleagues and the Board for the annual celebrating Excellence in Care Awards, 2023-24.

  • Please do not visit our hospital or care homes if you feel unwell

    As usual, at this time of year, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections are circulating. Therefore, it is important that we prevent highly contagious viral illnesses such as flu, Covid, and norovirus from being passed onto vulnerable patients and the staff caring for them.
